Farewell to the Gods: Anti-superstition and Self-identity in Modern China

Time:19:00 on December 12th (Saturday)

Location:Tencent conference (ID: 698901072)

Speaker:Jie Shen (Associate Research Fellow, Institute of History, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences)

During the rise of modern countries in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the belief world of China people experienced rapid fracture and evolution. Superstition has risen from customs and people’s livelihood to a symbolic obstacle to the construction of a new nation. As a multiple carrier of culture, lifestyle and traditional politics, it has become a testing ground for all kinds of modernists to criticize, discuss and build an ideal model of a new country. Opposing superstition provides a complete possibility for the establishment of a strong attitude, which is both a position and a new belief. If the anti-superstition problem in modern China is regarded as a field of historical construction, then to clarify it, we need to follow the context to understand the emergence and development of the problem. "Superstition" has become the focus of criticism, and "set vector" also reflects the diversity of sources and paths. There is no unified direction to oppose superstition as an attitude, expression and practice. We will outline the development process of modernity in the first half of the 20th century with the pluralistic "enlightenment" and "politics" pointed by anti-superstition.

Rural Youth and New Culture Practice

Time:December 12th (Saturday) 19:00-20:00

Location:Bi Li Bi Li (room number: 22213171)

Speaker:Meng Dengying (Associate Professor, School of Humanities, China Academy of Social Sciences)

On the one hand, the country is advocating the cultivation of rural revitalization talents who know one thing and love two things, and rural areas need young people; On the other hand, the employment pressure of college students is increasing, and urban life is becoming more and more difficult. Can young people be combined with rural construction? This is a big issue of the times, not only the employment opportunities, but also the culture and values. To answer these questions, perhaps we need to look for clues from the background of the times in which young people support agriculture, especially from the historical context of the evolution of youth culture and values in China since modern times, and reflect on the driving force behind this phenomenon from the interactive tension between social reality and personal ideals. Furthermore, how to form a reflection from the practice of supporting agriculture and building youth in rural areas, rise to a universal level, and respond to the problems of the times is also an urgent task. Therefore, Guo Ren Xiang Jian Lecture Hall/Guo Ren Reading Club webcast lecture invited Meng Dengying from China Academy of Social Sciences to analyze and interpret it for everyone.

What Promoted the Scientific Revolution —— From the "Copernican Revolution"

Location:Baidu, Sina Weibo Live and Sohu Live.

Speaker:Wu Guosheng (Professor, Dean of Humanities, Tsinghua University, Head of the Department of Science History)

From Aristotle to Copernicus, how the traditional view of the universe based on subjective imagination evolved into a modern view of the universe based on mathematical observation is a revolution in the history of western science. However, there are many other factors behind this scientific revolution called "Copernicus Revolution", including Galileo’s well-known experiment of who landed the first two iron balls at the leaning tower of Pisa, Columbus, Magellan and other western explorers’ voyage to update the new horizon of the earth, and the revival of an ancient mysterious philosophy that regarded the sun as the image of God during the Renaissance. Then, how do the scientific, historical and philosophical factors behind the Copernican Revolution work together to develop western science? How did it promote the later industrial revolution? Looking back at China, is the most fundamental factor that restricted the scientific development of ancient China just the lack of interaction among these scientific, historical and philosophical factors? Peking University Publishing House invited Professor Wu Guosheng, director of the Department of Science History of Tsinghua University Humanities College, to be a guest in the live broadcast room of Peking University Boya Forum to tell you about it.
