Korean Central News Agency reported that during the meeting held on February 28th, Kim Jong-un, the top leader of the DPRK, and Trump, the US President, spoke highly of the progress made by the two sides in the implementation of the Singapore Joint Statement, and on this basis, they frankly exchanged views on specific issues to improve the DPRK-US relations.
The two sides agreed that the efforts made by the DPRK and the United States to ease the tension on the Korean Peninsula, promote peace and achieve comprehensive denuclearization are of great significance to enhancing mutual trust and fundamentally changing the decades-long distrust and hostile relationship between the DPRK and the United States.
Kim Jong-un and Trump listened to their respective views on some problems that must be solved at present in order to implement the common goals set out in the Singapore Joint Statement, and seriously discussed the ways to achieve them.
The two sides stated that the second meeting between the DPRK and the US leaders in Hanoi was an important opportunity to further enhance mutual trust between the DPRK and the US and elevate bilateral relations to a new stage. The two sides agreed to continue dialogue in the future in order to realize the denuclearization of the peninsula and improve the close ties between the DPRK and the United States, and to solve the problems discussed in this meeting. Kim Jong-un and Trump also met again.
The DPRK said that during the meeting, it called for the lifting of some sanctions.
In the early morning of March 1, local time, the DPRK delegation attending the second meeting of DPRK-US leaders in Hanoi, Vietnam called media reporters to hold a press conference to release the DPRK position to the media on the results of the second meeting of DPRK-US leaders.
DPRK Foreign Minister Li Yonghao said that in this DPRK-US leaders’ meeting, North Korea did not demand the comprehensive lifting of all sanctions against the DPRK as US President Trump said, but demanded the lifting of several major sanctions against the DPRK in the field of people’s livelihood. Li Yonghao said that if the United States agrees to lift some sanctions against the DPRK, the DPRK will permanently and completely abandon Yongbyon nuclear facilities, including plutonium and uranium production facilities, under the witness of American experts and the joint operation of technicians from both sides. However, this proposal has not received a positive response from the US. Li Yonghao said that if the US continues to demand dialogue in the future, the relevant position of the DPRK will not change.
